When Pricing Feels Personal

Let’s Get One Thing Straight About Pricing

The cliché of "charge what you’re worth" is total BS. When you associate your prices on your inherent value, this is heading down a slippery slope that ties your self worth to your success.

What the “Charge Your Worth” Advice Gets Dangerously Wrong

This is a really common trait in women with the Worthiness Money Block, who often find themselves believing that they need to prove they're worthy of the success they've created in their business. This block can get in the way when it comes to pricing, because we have learned to associate our worth with money.

The Worthiness Block also has a very persistent voice that whispers doubts and fuels our insecurities. When it comes to pricing and financial decisions, our inner money critic can be a mean girl. Our inner money critic often convinces us that we're not "good enough" to charge premium rates or that we don't deserve financial success.

Your inner money critic

This critical voice influences not just our pricing strategies but our entire approach to money and success. It's the voice that says, "Who do you think you are to charge that much?" or "You'll never be as successful as [insert name of admired entrepreneur]." Recognising this voice is the first step towards silencing it, and this is something I teach inside the Millionaire Mindset Academy.

When we listen to our inner money critic, we set in motion a cycle of under-earning that can have long-lasting effects on our businesses and personal lives. This cycle often includes:

  • Attracting clients who undervalue our services (they might ask for extended payment plans or discounts, or not pay their invoices on time)

  • Working longer hours to compensate for lower rates

  • Experiencing burnout and resentment

  • Not being able to enjoy the wealth we've created because of feeling undeserving

Signs You’re Caught in the Worthiness Money Block

But when you look a little deeper and think about your inner money critic - who does she remind you of? How did you learn that money and worth were linked together? Chances are there have been some experiences in your childhood that have led you to develop a strong inner money critic. Perhaps your inner critic reminds you of your parents in some way. We've previously stored those harsh, critical words as our own. When we begin to recognise that our inner critic is not actually our voice, it can be empowering.

Keep in mind these are not conscious beliefs that we develop. This all happens beneath our conscious awareness and we bring those subconscious thoughts into our current life.

5 Practical Ways to Start Rewriting Your Money Story

If you're ready to start reprogramming your relationship with pricing and money, here are some strategies to help get you started:

  1. Separate Self-Worth from Financial Success:
Your pricing doesn't define your self-worth. You could have zero dollars in your bank account and still be inherently worthy. The key is understanding that your value goes beyond a price tag.

  2. Tune into Your Inner Millionaire:

Instead of listening to your inner critic, try to connect with your "inner millionaire." This is the part of you that knows your true worth and isn't afraid to claim it. What would your inner millionaire advise about your pricing?

  3. Examine Your Money Stories:
Take time to reflect on the beliefs you hold about money. Where did these beliefs come from? Are they serving you or holding you back? Challenge the narratives that no longer align with your goals and aspirations.

  4. Create a Safe Space for Change:
Transforming deeply ingrained beliefs takes time. Give yourself permission to make gradual changes. Start by incrementally increasing your prices or setting aside small amounts of money for investments or savings.

  5. Reframe Your Perspective on Wealth:
True wealth isn't just about accumulating money—it's about creating a life of freedom, choice, and impact. How can your business contribute to this broader definition of wealth?
